Varsity Bar

Two-level sports-themed gay bar in the former Eagle Houston space, with game-day watch parties and DJs.

What it's known for

Varsity Bar is a two-level sports-themed gay bar at 611 Hyde Park Blvd, in the former Eagle Houston space. It is one of the newer names in Montrose and it serves as a home base for local LGBTQ+ sports leagues. Game days bring watch parties to the screens, and on busy nights the bar runs two dance floors with DJs. Out x Out and OutSmart both cover it as part of the current Montrose scene, and Visit Houston lists it too.

Regular nights

  • Game days: watch parties
  • Busy nights: DJs on two dance floors

Lineups change. Check with the venue before you go.

Crowd and vibe

Varsity blends a sports bar with a night out, so you can arrive for the game and stay for the music. The leagues give it a team-night energy, and it is a good first stop if you want to find an LGBTQ+ sports group and meet people. Shaded outdoor areas make it easier to enjoy in Houston's heat, and having two levels means you can usually find a quieter corner to talk.

Getting there

Hyde Park Blvd is a short walk from Pacific St, so Varsity works well with JR's, South Beach and Crocker on the same night. We could not confirm regular hours or parking, so check varsitybarhouston.com before you head out, especially around big games when it fills up early. Street parking in the area is limited on weekends, and a rideshare saves you the search. If you are coming for a game, check the bar's social pages first, since big games can change what is on the screens.
